Word attack skills empower a student to make sense of images (letters of the alphabet) and make sense of written language, especially to be able to pronounce unknown words.
The Gibson Test plays an audio file for a series of made-up words and asks the student to select the spelling that most closely represents the sounds heard. Made-up words are used to make sure any student does not already know how to spell a common word.
